Borussia Dortmund has sacked head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect due to poor results, the club announced on Wednesday.

"We hold Nuri Sahin and his work in high esteem and had hoped for a long and successful collaboration, hoping until the very end that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together," said Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken.

"However, after four defeats in a row, only one win in our last nine games and tenth place in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in our chances of achieving our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna."

Sahin joined BVB in January 2024, initially as Edin Terzic's assistant. He took over in the summer and has since managed just 12 wins in 27 games. Prior to that, he gained coaching experience with Antalyaspor in Turkey.

When Sahin was a player, he began his career at Borussia Dortmund, where he broke through from the youth team to the first team and won a Bundesliga title.

"Unfortunately, we were not able to fulfil Borussia Dortmund's sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best," said Sahin.

Following Sahin's departure, Borussia Dortmund has appointed Mike Tullberg as caretaker coach for the upcoming Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen. The 39-year-old, who has been BVB's U-19 coach since 2020, will take over on an interim basis until the club announces a new coach.
