"1985-2024: Forty Years of Contemporary Ink in China," funded by the 2024 China National Arts Fund Dissemination, Exchange, and Promotion Project, runs through Nov. 23 at the Art Museum of the Nanjing University of the Arts. The exhibition has drawn steady crowds since its Nov. 2 opening.
The show, hosted by the Nanjing University of the Arts and the Annual Review of China Contemporary Ink Painting Organizing Committee, traces the evolution of contemporary Chinese ink painting from the 1985 New Wave Art Movement. It presents four decades of artistic development and innovation in Chinese art.

According to organizers, the selection of artists and works for the exhibition was rigorous. Each piece needed to demonstrate innovative use of the medium, show the artist's progression from traditional to contemporary styles and maintain cultural relevance while bridging historical and modern approaches.
Contemporary Chinese ink painting has emerged as a distinctive force in Chinese art, and this exhibition celebrates its long-term achievements. The works combine traditional Chinese techniques with modern global influences, exploring relationships between brushwork, ink, paper and materials. The exhibition also showcases multimedia interpretations of Chinese symbols, aesthetics and philosophy, offering a modern perspective on Chinese culture.
